Hello, my long lost blogging family! It’s been awhile! Aside from my latest post on Thursday, I haven’t posted in weeks! I’ve missed it so much. A lot has been happening behind the scenes both in my personal life and blogging world. I thought instead of my usual beauty related post I’d just take the time to chat with y’all. (Yes, I said “y’all” even though I’m from New York; I just felt like it fit in that sentence!)
When I’m not blogging or posting on Instagram (which I do daily), I’m knee deep in schoolwork, work, being a puppy mom, a fiancé, personal assistant to my mom, an older sister, a friend, and avid Netflix/Hulu binge watcher. I am currently completing pre-requisite classes to enter a Master’s program in Speech-Language Pathology.
I have my bachelors degree in linguistics which definitely will help me one day with speech path. but I needed a couple more classes since I don’t have a degree in communication disorders. Generally, for speech path. graduate programs you need a degree in communication disorders or the required prerequisite classes. That being said, I am ALMOST DONE with my last semester of prerequisites, Thank the Good Lord! Don’t get me wrong, I really do enjoy the classes but I could definitely use a breather. I’ve been taking all of these classes online which may seem easy but honestly I think it’s harder than going to class! There aren’t any set class times so you’re totally on your own to make sure you’re completing assignments and actually learning the material. It’s been a journey!
Dexter, my puppy, is now over a year old and chock full of personality. He’s the sweetest and happiest little baby. If I could take him to Target (school, the grocery store, work, church, etc.) with me, I 100% would! He’s a Pointer/Jack Russel mix so he’s not by any means a tiny dog. I’ve thought about sticking him in my bag but he has waaaay outgrown that. The rescue where we got him from said he would be 40 pounds max…he’s pushing 50 pounds now. With online classes, I’ve definitely had the chance to stay at home more and hangout with him. Win-win situation for both of us. I would love to incorporate puppy posts one day maybe like “DIY Dog Treats” or something like that. Just some future thinking. Not sure if that is too far off the beauty, skincare, lifestyle theme. Puppies are a lifestyle, no?
My fiancé, Conor, deployed during all of this time as well. So between classes, work, blogging, Dexter, and the time difference, I’ve been a busy little lady! I have to say, we honestly talk a lot. Especially with the online classes, my schedule is pretty flexible which is great with the time difference and FaceTime calls.
When I’m not blogging, I am pretty much exclusively on Instagram. Instagram is how I gain a lot of exposure for the blog. It’s where I have found several friendships with other women around the world who share a passion and obsession for beauty and makeup like me. It’s such a fantastic, positive, and supportive environment that I’ve found over there; I love it!
That being said the shadow ban that has been sweeping Instagram totally messed up blogging for me. If you have an Instagram you know of the constant changing algorithm with the app updates. The bane of my Instagram existence. Basically, the algorithm initially got rid of the chronological ordering of posts. Now Instagram only displays posts they think you would be most interested in seeing on your feed whether the post was uploaded 5 minutes ago or 5 days ago. It’s pretty much impossible to see all of the new posts from the people you follow. It’s frustrating! But we all got through that, right? Somewhat. Until now.
The shadow ban has setback a lot of accounts. The shadow ban in a nut shell is Instagram deeming certain hashtags unfit or “bad.” I don’t mean hashtags with bad or derogatory words either; I mean hashtags I used like “beauty blogger” or “makeup lover”. Basically, if an account uses hashtags that Instagram has flagged, they will shadow ban your post and make sure none of the hashtags work. Therefore, your pictures/posts will not appear under those hashtags and no organic traffic can come to your account. Only your followers will be able to see your posts. Going back to the algorithm though, if Instagram doesn’t find your post worthy of someone else’s interests, that person won’t see your picture. It’s a vicious cycle! It makes your account extremely hard to grow and gain exposure. Needless to say, my account was banned for awhile (Want to know if your account has been shadow banned? Click here to find out). It was super frustrating and I lost a ton of motivation to post because no one could see my work. I couldn’t post any new pictures, any blog post references, nada. I took a break from Instagram for awhile and just within the last couple of days has my account been unlocked or unbanned. During that time, I decided that it no longer was going to deter me from blogging, so here I am! Back to blogging after breaking out of the Instagram shadow ban slammer! Long term I think it really will affect gaining traffic to the blog but that wasn’t why I started blogging in the first place. Blogging is supposed to be fun and a way for me to share my ideas and passions and that is what I intend to keep it as!
I’ll be getting back to my regular schedule of blogging so be on the look out for many new posts! I have a lot already done before this ban happened and I’m very excited to share them 🙂 Thank you all for sticking with me! If you ever miss me on a non-new post day then head over to my Instagram (@ablushofcolor) and come join the beauty community! I post daily reviews, beauty finds, and suggestions. I hope I didn’t bore you too much but I felt I needed to share why I was MIA for so long! Hope you have a great day/night my lovely friends!
