Doing my makeup in the morning is one of the most relaxing parts of my day. I set myself up in front of my vanity, put on Netflix, and get down to business. Truth be told because of Netflix sometimes it takes me a lot longer than it should because I get sucked in but if it gets my day going and I have the time than that’s fine with me! There is nothing more frustrating though than taking your time applying your makeup and then by the afternoon it’s sliding around your face. Patchy, crumbling foundation is not a cute look no matter who you are. Primers allow you to have your cake and eat it too! We’ve talked about eye primers in previous posts but why only limit them to your eyelids?! Your cheeks, forehead, and chin will thank you! A face primer is basically the same concept as an eye primer. The primer acts as a barrier between your skin and face products. It keeps the natural oils of your skin from seeping through and disturbing your foundation, concealer, etc. In addition, it acts as a sort of sticky substance for your foundation to cling too. Another key element for keeping your foundation in place. We don’t spend all this time figuring out our skin’s undertone for the perfect foundation shade just for it to be broken up a couple of hours later!
Primers, in a sense are like a foundation. They come in a variety of shades, textures, and finishes. There are color correcting primers that will have a certain colored tint to them, for example, a green one to cancel out redness. There are more silicone based primers that will create a very smooth skin surface for makeup application. Primers with luminosity components to give your skin an extra glow through your foundation. Last but not least, primer waters. These primers are in spray bottles and really give your skin a lot of extra hydration before going in with more heavy products. There’s definitely a primer for every skin type.
For a while, I was a little skeptical about face primers. I didn’t really see the purpose of them. I thought it was just another step and one that I could forgo. All throughout high school and the beginning of college I didn’t wear a primer. My makeup looked nice and fresh in the morning but by the time I was home from class it looked like I never put on any face makeup. My eyeshadow was intact though, from that primer! You would have thought that I would catch on as to why one piece of my makeup routine stayed the same and the others didn’t. It wasn’t until my junior year of college that I really figured out a primer was necessary. Going back to school in August, it was HOT. I mean stick a toe outside the dorm room door and you were boiling. My makeup essentially jumped off my face because I was so sweaty. A friend of mine introduced me to the Smashbox Pore Vanisher and my life was forever changed. This little silicone beauty lays so smooth on my skin and really keeps my foundation in place. This particular primer is also great for people who have large pores. The primer is magic pretty much. It gets right in there and makes them appear so tiny and almost nonexistent. But it doesn’t clog them up! Just make sure to take your make up off at night otherwise it may. From that day, I have sworn by a primer. From the time I put any product on in the morning to when I take it off at night my foundation looks the same. It’s been a life saver! For those of you who get frustrated, you need this in your life. I promise you, you’ll be forever changed, it’s that good!
Application: After applying your moisturizer, go in with a primer before any other face makeup. For every primer (besides a spray), with clean hands get some of the product on the tips of your fingers. Gently rub the product on the areas of your face you most want to concentrate. I recommend your t-zone and cheeks especially. You can totally do your entire face but I have found that your t-zone is where most of the product tends to disappear. By using your fingers, the warmth allows for the product to easily slip into your skin. Feel free to use a damp beauty sponge as well if you don’t want to use your hands. Once applied, carry on with the rest of your usual beauty routine.
Smashbox Primer Water: Holy grail primer. It’s not just water thrown into a fancy bottle and called a primer. This magical liquid really does wonders for your skin! It instantly hydrates it and gives it more life. Even if I’m not wearing makeup that day, I’ll give my face a few sprits after my moisturizer and be good to go. The water really refreshes your skin! Sometimes after I’m finished applying my makeup I’ll take another few sprits of it before heading out the door. Perfect for all skin types but drier skin especially.
Smashbox Pore Vanisher: First of all the packaging is polka dots, how can you not love it? If you have larger pores and find that your makeup gets stuck in them, this is the primer for you! This primer will smooth everything out and like I said before, pretty much make your pores nonexistent. I haven’t ever had an issue with it clogging my pores, just remember to wash off your makeup at night! This primer does have a tint to it but once blended out you can’t see it at all on your skin. The tint doesn’t have any color correcting properties though, it’s just the color.
BECCA Backlight Priming Filter: Holy grail primer #2. I use this and the Smashbox Primer Water religiously every day. This primer is more of a liquid. It has a peachy, pink coloring with shimmery reflects in it. It is not chunky glitter or anything. BECCA has done such an amazing job with this product. The shimmery reflects really give your skin a glowing look. And it will shine through your foundation in the most natural way for a sheer glow from within. I use this too with or without makeup. It gives your face a nice refreshed look and feeling either way.
NYX Angel Veil: Hands down the best primer from the drugstore I’ve ever tried. This is sort of a combination between the Smashbox Pore Vanisher and the BECCA Backlight in a matter of texture. It’s more of a liquid but dries down to a silicone finish. This primer creates a really nice, smooth base for your makeup as well. However, it does not provide any luminosity or pore filling. This primer is ideal for younger skin type.
