From the time I was a teenager my mom always said to me, “just throw on some gloss before you leave.” Even if I was in a t-shirt and jeans, gloss was the key to making you look automatically put together. Of course my 12-year-old self just thought it was annoying; obviously before I knew any better about the world of makeup. My mom now couldn’t be more right. A quick lip color really does make it look like you’ve got it together. I’ll be honest, lipstick was probably my least favorite item for a long time. I was never daring enough to change my lip color from its natural pink to a deep brown. I thought I looked silly. Now, aside from foundation and eyeshadow, it is my favorite thing to buy. Pink, red, purple, gray, orange, you name it I probably have it.
Within the last couple of years, liquid lipsticks have graced the market. Unlike conventional lipsticks, they (usually) come in long skinny tubes similar to a lip gloss and are completely liquid, hence the name liquid lipstick. Let me be the first to tell you if you didn’t know already, these things are life changing. Completely changed the lipstick game. Picture this, applying your lipstick once in the morning and being set for the day with minimal (if any depending on the brand) touch ups AND no transfer! Yes, we can all say a hallelujah together! Liquid Lipsticks generally go on liquidly and dry down to a matte finish. To apply the product, start on one side of your top lip, then fill in the other, and do one long swipe on your bottom lip. This way the product will not bunch up and begin to flake on you. They generally dry very quickly, so you want to work kind of fast when putting them on. Again, this depends on your brand of lipstick, some take longer than others. The cosmetic industry has been pumping out these puppies across high-end and drugstore brands. There are so many shades you can choose from just as a regular tube lipstick. If you ask me, these are where it’s at. If you don’t like a matte finish, you can always top it with a clear gloss or a colored one. Below I’ve put together a rather detailed list of my favorites, both drugstore and high-end.
*Pro Tip: Exfoliate your lips before application for the smoothest appearance. Also, applying a lip balm or lip mask to your lips before application will keep your lips from feeling suffocated because matte formulas tend to be on the drying side.
ColourPop Ultra Matte Lip:
Pros: Price point: $6. TONS of color options, very opaque, zero transfer, begins to flake with eating or drinking.
Cons: Very drying formula. Definiely need a lipbalm underneath
I do recommend these! These babies can only be purchased online through their website (colourpop.com).
NYX Liquid Suede:
Pros: Very comfortable to wear, Price Point: $6.99, very opaque, lasts a decent amount of time.
Cons: Not a lot of color options, does transfer
Holy amazeballs. Hands down my most favorite drugstore liquid lipstick. Dries to a demi matte finish (its not 100% matte still has some shine).
Ulta Matte Lip Cream:
Pros: Great formula, very opaque, comfortable to wear, Price Point: $9, dries completely matte.
Cons: Not a lot of color options, takes a while to dry, does transfer.
Wouldn’t be my first choice, but I do really love the colors that I have. Striking is my favorite.
Pros: Price Point: $6.99, comfortable to wear, dual-ended comes with a gloss, doesn’t budge.
Cons: Dries to a shimmery finish, not opaque at all, sticky.
These are teetering on the liquid lipstick side… In a pinch these would do but they really will not deliver the same effect as any of these other products.
Maybelline Vivid Matte:
Pros: Price point: $7.99.
Cons: Does not dry down, mousse formula (thick consistency, personally not my favorite), does transfer, not a wide color selection.
I really did not like this… I really tried but I couldn’t get on board, there are just way too many great liquid lipsticks on the market
Tarte Tarteist Lip Paint:
Pros: Color selection, comfortable formula, very opaque
Cons: Takes a bit to dry, does transfer, not very long wearing, Price Point: $20
I liked these. They dry to a demi matte finish. Kind of have a minty smell.
Too Faced Melted Matte:
Pros: Color selection, comfortable formula, doesn’t transfer, completely matte, very opaque, long wearing
Cons: Price Point: $21.
I love these! The packaging is super cute and their formula is bomb. Highly recommend
Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick:
Pros: Amazing color selection, dries completely matte, doesn’t transfer, very opaque, long wearing
Cons: A little drying, Price Point: $20
The pioneer of liquid lipstick. They had a lot of mixed reviews in the beginning but I think these are beautiful. Definitely long wearing and just remember that lip balm underneath. Highly recommend
Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick:
Pros: Great color selection, very opaque, dries super fast and matte, doesn’t transfer, will stay on your lips for days to come
Cons: Drying, Price Point: $20
One of the first I’ve ever tried and continue to buy. I love the super sleek packaging and daring colors she has.
Smashbox Always On Liquid Lipstick:
Pros: Color selection, comfortable formula, very opaque, long wearing, dries completely matte
Cons: Price Point: $24, very minimal transfer
These do not dry out my lips at all! They’re super comfortable to wear and I love the whole color selection.
Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick:
Pros: Beautiful color selection, very opaque, dries completely matte, super long wearing
Cons: Minimal transfer, a little drying, Price Point: $24
I will totally endure the drying of this lipstick in order to wear it; the formula is outstanding otherwise.
