I feel like deodorant is not something that is super talked about on the reg. In my family, it is. I’ve had a long medical history of a rare skin disorder that has left me with multiple surgeries. This is not a sob story by any means! If anything it just adds to what makes me my own person. With all of these surgeries and flair ups I’ve really come to understand the importance of reading ingredients. Normal deodorant just wasn’t going to work for my overly sensitive skin because of the aluminum ingredients, parabens, and harsh chemical additives. So, I made the switch to the Healthy Deodorant by LaVanila.Today, I can say I’ve been using the Healthy Deodorant for about 3 years and I love it! The Healthy Deodorant is formulated without all those terrible ingredients. It’s natural based with added essential oils and antioxidants. It’s completely vegan and cruelty free. It’s been clinically tested and dermatologist approved; I promise you it’s not gimmicky in any way. This deodorant has turned around my skin in amazing ways. I have so many fewer flair ups than I used to get (Hallelujah!).
The deodorant comes in 9 different varieties:
- Pure Vanilla
- Vanilla Lavender
- Vanilla Coconut
- Vanilla Grapefruit
- Fresh Vanilla Lemon
- Vanilla Passion Fruit
- Vanilla Blackberry
- Sport Luxe
- Fragrance Free
Personally, my favorites are the Pure Vanilla, Vanilla Coconut and the Vanilla Blackberry. The scents of these little dudes are not overpowering. They’re pretty minimal but they keep the stench at bay, if you know what I mean. The Sport Luxe line is fairly new. It’s geared towards the active lifestyle but honestly I’ve only ever used the regular deodorants when I work out and it’s been completely fine. All of the varieties, with the exception of the Sport Luxe are $14, Sport Luxe is $16. The deodorant is much pricier than regular deodorant but you’re getting a whole load more benefits from it. To me, it is 100% worth it.
Okay, but why is aluminum so bad you may be wondering? Aluminum is not something our bodies need. It does not breakdown like vitamins or minerals. Instead it occupies a residency in our kidneys, livers, lungs, brain, thyroid, etc. wherever it can compete for calcium absorption (“Why I’m Concerned About the Dangers of Aluminum,” 2013). Unfortunately, aluminum is a added to a lot of our daily products.. cookware, soda cans, etc. Therefore, by limiting or reducing any intake is super beneficial. If you want to learn more, click here.
Using the actual deodorant is not any different. It’s your usual solid only it’s more of a spherical shape rather than an oblong. It does not go on clear. It definitely leaves a
subtle white-cast on your underarms. I’ll be completely honest though. If you’re going to make the switch to this deodorant, you MUST give it a month to really start to work. Your body will be used to all the aluminum and parabens that have gotten stuck in your skin. When switching to this deodorant without all those additives your body is going to detox. It’s going to be smelly, I won’t lie. It will take your body about a month to fully get rid of all the toxins and then the deodorant will really be able to kick in and do its thing.
When I first made the switch I was like “OH NO WAY! NOT TODAY!” Honestly even though it was one of my more stinky months it wasn’t unbearable and I just made sure to really wash or pat my pits with some water during the day and it was totally manageable. The winter season is the perfect time to make the switch because of all the bulky clothing! No one is going to smell you! PLUS, it’s chilly, you aren’t going to sweat as much. On Amazon, they have a cute little trio of mini travel-size deodorants (pictured above). It is the perfect way to try out this product without fully committing to a full size and you’ll get the chance to try out three different scents—Pure Vanilla, Vanilla Coconut, and Vanilla Blackberry (My faves! Actually, I have this set!). It’s going to save you a few bucks instead of buying it on their main website or in stores.
LaVanila is sold at Sephora and Whole Foods Market. They also have an assortment of body products including butters and scrubs, fragrances, and sun protection.
