Happy New Year! It’s been a minute (or a month and half) since I’ve last posted. I’ve missed this! I’ve had a hectic last couple of months with school and I had to take a break from the weekly blogs. Believe me, I would have much rather blogged! If ever my posts are not consistent again or you just miss your beauty news, I am always on Instagram and Pinterest so be sure to follow me there! IG: @ablushofcolor P: www.pinterest.com/curlygrll/ Also, you’ve probably noticed a new blog layout! I figured the blog deserved a new beginning as well for 2017. Anyway, now that we’re up to date let’s get in to my top beauty picks for 2016! A lot of my picks I have already spoken about this year so I’ll try to keep it brief.
Foundation: Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Water Foundation ($39)
If there were ever a product I feel you should definitely splurge on (besides skincare) I would 100% say foundation. It is the foundation of your whole look! Ha, see what I did there? Not that drugstore foundations are not good, I just feel the ingredients in higher end brands have better skin properties, a much wider color range, and greater longevity. Yes, they are a pretty penny but it is a penny well spent. Want to learn more about foundation and picking the right one? Click here.
The Tarte foundation is absolutely fantastic! The packaging is gorgeous. It is a water foundation so it’s very loose. However, the water will help your skin to feel and appear much more hydrated. I have to set mine because I have combo skin otherwise it will slide around my face throughout the day. It is medium to buildable coverage. I cannot say enough great things about this foundation! Every time I wear it, it is a great foundation day! What more could you want? They do have a number of shades so it should be easier to find a shade that works for you! Because this is a water foundation, I’m not sure I would 100% recommend this to those of you who have very dry skin. Very dry skin and water foundation tend not to mix well because of the skins thirst it will suck up a lot of the foundation. If possible, get a sample of this foundation first and try it on your skin before purchasing.
Primer: BECCA Backlight Priming Filter ($38)
You’re probably super sick of me mentioning this already but I can’t help it! If you want dewy, illuminated, glowing skin this is the primer for you! It gives a subtle glow from underneath your foundation giving you that appearance of glowing from within. It is a very silky primer. No silicone at all. This is perfect for all skin types. Sometimes, I’ll wear this primer without any makeup except for concealer and mascara and it still looks fantastic. A more in-depth review of my love for this primer can be found here as well as other primers I loved in 2016 and will continue to use!
Concealer: Tarte Shape Tape Contour Concealer ($24)
Okay, so if you follow any beauty accounts on Instagram, beauty gurus on YouTube, read my blog, or are just a makeup lover in general you know the great chaos this concealer has caused this year. It has been sold out repeatedly every time it comes back in stock. It has been one of the most hyped products of this year hands down. All for good reason! Before you fall off your chair at the price of this concealer, let me just say that compared to other high-end concealers for example the Urban Decay Naked Skin Concealer ($28) or NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer ($29) you are getting DOUBLE the amount of product in the Tarte tube for $4-$5 cheaper! WHHHAAAAT?! But for real, this concealer changed the entire game. I have not used another one since first purchasing this baby in September and I’m still using that same tube! It’s the never ending tube of magical, creaseless, full-coverage amazingness. This is one of those concealers that if you forget to set it, it will not crease underneath your eyes. I’ll use this in the morning while I do my makeup and it will stay in place all day and night until I’m ready to take it off. This is also fantastic for covering those dark circles! They just recently came out with more shades as well. This is a MUST!! I’m not sure what Tarte made in this bottle but it definitely has magical unicorn properties and I’m all for it! Powder: Coty AirSpun Face Powder Extra Coverage ($5-$8)
2016 was the year of the bake! The baking technique swept the beauty community and left no one with creased concealer again. My powder of choice was the Coty AirSpun. This is a very finely milled loose powder with a slight fragrance. It is perfect for baking your concealer or setting your foundation. With the amount of product in the tub, you won’t have to buy it again for a super long time! If you have any irritation to fragrance, I would be leery of using this product. It is not strong and does dissipate once on your face but the perfumes may irritate your skin.
Eyeshadow Palette: Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance ($42)
Earlier when this palette launched I did a full review on this product. If you want my full thoughts, swatch pictures, and more check out the review here. This palette like the Tarte concealer took the beauty community by storm. This palette is ABH’s only permanent palette in their line so far. It is absolutely incredible! If rosey warm tones are your thing, then you need this palette no questions asked. The eyeshadows are all very pigmented and super easy to blend. As I’ve said before, I travel a lot. When you travel the makeup that you bring is definitely a tell-tale sign! This palette always makes it in to my bag! In fact, sometimes it is the only palette. ABH did not skimp on quality with this palette. It is absolutely wonderful. I’m surprised I haven’t hit pan on most of the shades already.
Mascara: Too Faced Better than Sex ($23)
This mascara has been the talk of my family this year! I have gotten so many people to switch to this mascara and all of them have had great things to say about it. After getting past the awkward name and odd glances you may get when speaking about it, this mascara will transform your lashes. It is super volumizing and lengthening without causing your lashes to clump! Your eyes will 100% be the center of attention! It’s a super black formula that will latch on to your lashes for an all-day wear without flaking. I have very watery eyes and I wear contacts. Mascara tends to drip down my face or irritate my contacts. I can say without any doubt that this mascara has never irritated my eyes or caused me to look like a raccoon! If you want to try this out without committing to the full price, try out the travel size! You won’t be disappointed.
Eyeliner: NYC Liquid Liner ($5)
I found this gem sort of on a whim. I had run out of my usual liquid liner (the Kat Von D Trooper liner—still amazing!) and had no time to run to Sephora so I picked this up from Target while I was there and haven’t looked back since! This is not a felt tip liner. It is simply a little brush applicator so it is a little harder to use in that you need more control but the payoff is incredible! This is the blackest liquid liner I have ever tried from the drugstore. It stays in place throughout the day, does not crack or flake, and even with my watery eyes it doesn’t bleed or run! Honestly, what more could you want? Definitely suggest trying this one out. For the price, you can’t beat it!
Blush: Milani Baked Blush in Berry Amore ($7)
I’m not really a huge blush wearer. I don’t have a lot of blushes in my collection. With blush, I found this product and I’ve repurchased it again and again. You can say we’re in a fully committed relationship. This is a berry colored blush with golden veining throughout. The golden veining gives the blush more luminosity. It is a very natural looking blush and will give the apples of your cheeks the perfect rosiness without turning you in to a clown! For the price as well you cannot go wrong!
Bronzer: Benefit Hoola Matte Bronzer ($29)
Holy macaroni. I’ve always heard great things about this product but I could never push myself to purchase it. I’m not sure why but probably because almost $30 for a bronzer was a bit outlandish even to me. However, I received this as gift and needless to say when I run out of this I’m definitely going to have buyer’s guilt when I repurchase it! This bronzer is perfect for contouring or warming up the skin. Personally, I use it for both but mainly just warming up the skin. I’m not a huuuuge fan of contouring. It is very soft and easy to work with. It comes in the cutest little box with a mirror and brush. So really, I guess the $29 can be justified. The brush is perfect for getting right in the hollows of your cheeks and creating that chiseled contour if you so please! I think this is totally worth it especially if you can double it as a contour powder and regular bronzer.
Narrowing down this list to one product per category was a bit of a challenge! I love testing out new products and seeing what works best. I’m hoping 2017 brings a lot of happiness and success to all who are reading this. Let’s put our best face forward this year and kick 2017’s butt!
